What kind of bird is this?

[ 2008/04/26 07:00 | by admin ]
This bird layed eggs in my drive way! The legs and beack are longer than an original bird, longer that a robin. It has 3 black stripes around its neck. It is mostly brown with a white belly.  I have not seen this kind of bird before. I live in south western new york. Help me out. Thanks!

Some type of wren or sparrow probably.  Call a librarian. In California they will look it up for you in the library.

Were the eggs standing on their big or small end?
If standing on the small end, then this is the fabulous driveway egg-laying bird.
Native to New Zealand.
Probably sucked across the ocean by one of the many cyclones we've been having lately.

Judging from your description, I would guess that it is either a killdeer or a plver (either Common Ringed or Wilson's).

Try these pictures:

It's a killdeer. They're fairly common, they're found in your area and they nest on gravel. I'm guessing you have a gravel driveway.

Killdeer. No doubt about it.  Search for kildeer on yahoo and you will find a picture of it.

It's probably a Killdeer. I saw one over a year ago when I was living in New Jersey it was in the parking lot of a Fedex shipping office. I have a guide book on New York birds and Killdeers are one of the birds listed. Maybe you should do some research on them.
