Tell me about my newly adopted kitten, a Diluted Tort (Tortie)-long-haired?
[ 2008/05/09 21:07 | by admin ]
I adopted a kitten from the vet today. It's a five-week-old Diluted Tort (they said). It has long hair. Gorgeous gem-like blue eyes. It's silver with hues of amber at the roots. It's a puff ball.
Violet, her vet-given name (that I LOVE), hops like a bunny. She mews and is precious. She is a messy potty-girl getting pee and poo on her gorgeous fur. And her food gets everywhere.
The vet said we would have to bathe her daily. So far today we've bathed her twice and cleaned her hiney three times. We don’t have OCD, but the kitty is messy and the mess bothers her. Her long hair drags the mess around the house. Is there a way to train her to be neat?
She doesn’t seem to know how to clean herself. She's precious and I would love to learn how to care for her. I have three older shirt-haired cats. They all sniff her and seem to like her. They are even a bit afraid of her. I don’t think they know what she is!
Thanks for your help.
Usually kittens don't get separated from their mothers until they are 6 weeks or older.
Have patience with her. Clean her up, and hopefully in another 2 weeks, she'll get the hang of it.
Ask your vet for help if she doesn't shape up in a couple of weeks.
Congrats on your new baby.
(Oh, and once the potty problem goes away - you won't need to bathe her daily - just brush her frequently. )

I think its because she's so young.Usually kittens don't get separated from their mothers until they are 6 weeks or older.

Oh, how wonderful. I bet she's beyond adorable. It's odd for the blue eyes -- aren't you lucky! She's going to be a beautiful baby when she grows up, too. Just be prepared -- I'm willing to bet she's gong to be VERY dainty, very fussy, and very very femine. (I have a regular long-hair tortie for almost 15 years, and had a short hair for 5 years before that). I do believe these are my absolute favorite kitties -- so much personality. A bit weird, but it adds to their uniqueness. I will repeat again the quote I read a long time ago about them that I just love. It went something like "Tortoiseshell cats are like chocolate bars with almonds -- half sweet and half nuts." They LOVE attention and need a lot of, and are very cuddly and want to be CLOOOOOSE to their humans (at least all the ones I ever met have been), and they like to talk to you, too, so feel free to have conversations with her. *LOL* CONGRATULATIONS on your quirky new acquisition. You have no idea what you're in for -- but you're gonna love it!!! And isn't she lucky she found you!!!(Oh, and once the potty problem goes away - you won't need to bathe her daily - just brush her frequently. )

To help with keeping my orphans clean I will sometimes shave the hind area, don't worry it will look odd but hair grows back. If you are not confident in doing this ask your vet to give her a sanitary shave, also try feeding dry kibble instead of canned food to help with poop mess. Very cute name and may you both have many good years and memories together. Good Luck.Bookmark Yourself: Tell me about my newly adopted kitten, a Diluted Tort (Tortie)-long-haired?
